C1.1 Particles and their Behaviour Flashcards
What is a mixture?
A material whose properties are not the same all the way through. It is more than one substance not chemcially reacted together.
What is a substance?
A material that is not a mixture. It has the same properties all the way through.
What are the three states of matter?
Solid, Liquid and Gas
How are particles in solids arranged?
In a regular fixed pattern with no gaps between particles
How are particles in liquids arranged?
Close together but in an irregular pattern with no gaps between particles
How are particles in gases arranged?
They and far apart
Can solids be compressed?
No
Can liquids be compressed?
No
Can gases be compressed?
Yes
Do solids flow?
No
Do liquids flow?
Yes
Do gases flow?
Yes
What is the motion of solid particles?
Vibrate around a fixed point
What is the motion of liquid particles?
Move over each other
What is the motion of gas particles?
Move randomly in all directions
What is meant by boiling?
When a liquid turns into a gas
What is meant by condensing?
When a gas turns into a liquid
What is meant by freezing?
When a liquid turns into a solid
What is meant by melting?
When a solid turns into a liquid
If a unknown substance has a sharp melting point - is it pure or a mixture?
It is a pure substance
What is sublimation?
When a solid turns into a gas
What is evaporation?
When surface particles in a liquid. The temperature does not need to be above the boiling point.
State three ways to increase the rate of evaporation
Increase the temperature, increase the surface area of the material and increase the amount of wind (air flow)
What happens to your temperature as evaporation takes place?
Temperature reduces - you cool down
