C10- Organic Reactions Flashcards
Functional groups
A functional group is a group of atoms within an organic compound that give that compound its unique chemical and physical properties
Example of functional a group
The double bond (in alkenes)
Homologous series
A group of organic compounds that have the same functional group
Key features of homologous series
Similar chemical properties
Trends in physical properties
General formula
The general formula of a homologous series is an algebraic representation of the molecular formula of the compound in that series
General formula of alkanes
Cn H2n+2
Formula for ethane
C2H6
General formula for Alkenes
Cn H2n
Formula for Ethene
C2H4
Hydrocarbons
Compounds made of hydrogen and carbon atoms only
Alkanes
Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons. They only contain single covalent bonds between carbon atoms
Alkenes
Alkenes are unsaturated hydrocarbons. They contain a double covalent bond between carbon atoms
