Q

What are acids neutralised by to produce salts?

A

Acids are neutralised by metal oxides, metal hydroxides and metal carbonates to produce salts. Indigestion tablets often contain calcium or magnesium hydroxide which produce calcium or magnesium chloride.

Q

What is electrolysis?

A

Electrolysis is a process in which electrical energy, from a d.c. supply, decomposes compounds, such as hydrochloric acid to produce hydrogen and chlorine. It is the decomposition of a compound using electricity.

Q

Test for chlorine?

A

Chlorine bleaches damp litmus paper, turning it white. It may turn red at first because a solution of chlorine is acidic.

Q

Test for hydrogen?

A

Hydrogen makes a squeaky pop with a lighted splint. This is from the hydrogen burning with the oxygen in the air.

16
Q

What are the uses of salts formed from neutralisation?

A

Salts are used in fertilisers. Ammonium nitrate

Used in fireworks as colouring agents. Calcium chloride.

17
Q

What causes indigestion?

A

Too much hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Indigestion contain bases such as calcium carbonate to neutralise the excess acid.
