C1 Topic 3 - Acids Flashcards
Why would a indigestion tablet be used?
To neutralise excess acid.
What are acids neutralised by to produce salts?
Acids are neutralised by metal oxides, metal hydroxides and metal carbonates to produce salts. Indigestion tablets often contain calcium or magnesium hydroxide which produce calcium or magnesium chloride.
What type of salt does hydrochloric acid produce?
Chlorine salts.
What type of salts are produced from nitric acid?
Nitrate salts.
What type of salts are produced from sulfuric acid?
Sulfate salts.
What is electrolysis?
Electrolysis is a process in which electrical energy, from a d.c. supply, decomposes compounds, such as hydrochloric acid to produce hydrogen and chlorine. It is the decomposition of a compound using electricity.
Why is chlorine a hazard?
It is a toxic gas.
What is a use of chlorine?
Used to manufacture bleach.
What polymer does chlorine form?
Poly(chloroethene) - PVC
Test for oxygen?
Oxygen will relight a glowing splint.
Test for chlorine?
Chlorine bleaches damp litmus paper, turning it white. It may turn red at first because a solution of chlorine is acidic.
Test for hydrogen?
Hydrogen makes a squeaky pop with a lighted splint. This is from the hydrogen burning with the oxygen in the air.
Test for carbon dioxide?
Carbon dioxide, when bubbled through limewater, will turn the limewater cloudy.
What is the role of hydrochloric acid in the stomach?
Hydrochloric acid is there to help with digestion and to kill bacteria.
What is the neutralisation reaction?
Acid + base -> salt + water
