C1- Metals and their uses Flashcards
Why is gold found in the Earth as the metal?
It is very unreactive or very low in the reactivity series.
What are the typical properties of transition metals?
Strong,good conductors of heat and electricity, can be bent and hammered into shape.
Explain why most of the metals we use are not pure metals?
Most pure metals are too soft for many uses, they need to be made harder by alloying ( mixing with other elements)
Describe a reaction that is used to get iron from iron oxide. Write a word equation for the reaction
Iron oxide is reduced by carbon when heated together. Iron oxide + carbon-> iron + carbon dioxide
Name three types of steel and give a important property for each one.
Low- carbon steel or mild steel, easily shaped; high-carbon steel, hard; stainless steel,resist corrosion.
Explain why all steel are alloys.
All steels contain iron and carbon, so are mixtures of a metal with at least one other element.
Give three properties that make aluminum a useful metal
Low density, resist corrosion and good conductor of heat and/or electricity
Give three reasons why titanium is expensive.
Extraction needs several stages,uses a large amount of energy and uses a very reactive metal ( for displacement).
Suggest three reasons why we should we recycle iron and steel.
To save save iron ore reduce mining, to save energy or fossil fuels needed for extraction and to reduce waste going to land fill.
Name two methods, other than smelting, of extracting cooper from low-grade ores. Describe how one of these methods can be used to make copper.
Phytomining and bioleaching. Phytomining uses plants to absorb copper compounds from the ground. The plants are burned and produce ash. This can be smelted to produce copper or reacted with acid to produce a solution that can be electrolysed or to which iron can be added to produce copper.
Balance these equations:
Fe2O3 + C -> Fe + Co2
Na + TiCI4->Ti+ NaCI
2Fe2 O3 + 3C->4FE+ 3CO2
4Na+TiCI4->TI+ 4NaCI
What is the name for rock that is mined from which metal can be extracted economically?
Ore
