C1 & C2 - Atomic Structure & The Periodic Table Flashcards
What did John Newlands notice?
-He noticed that the properties of every eighth element seemed similar
What do the number of electrons determine?
-The number of electrons in the out shell dictate the properties
How are the elements sorted into groups?
-The group number in the periodic table equals the number of electrons in the outer shell
Why are group 0 elements unreactive?
-The noble gases (group 0) have a full outer shell and are unreactive
Does the reactivity increase or decrease as you go down group 1?
-Increase
What is the mass and charge of a proton?
- 1
- Positive
What is the mass and charge of a neutron?
- 1
- Neutral
What is the mass and charge of a electron?
- 0
- Negative
What is the atomic mass?
-Protons + neutrons
What is the atomic number?
-Number of protons
What are isotopes?
- Same number of protons and electrons
- Different number of neutrons
What is conversation of mass?
-We cannot create or destroy atoms in a chemical reaction, we can simply change how they are joined together
What ions do transition metals form?
-When transition metals do react, they lose electrons, and so form positive ions.
What are three separation techniques?
- Distillation
- Crystallisation
- Chromatography
- Filtration
