C1. Brain Structure and Function Part II Flashcards
What makes up the brain stem ?
Medulla
Pons
Midbrain
What is the function of the pons ?
Controlling autonomic function such as sleep and arousal
What is the function of the midbrain ?
Controls body movement
What is the function of the midbrain ?
Controls body movement and relay auto distort and visual information (motor)
Where is the substantial intra ?
Located in the midbrain which is a key role of movement
What is the little brain also known as ?
Cerebellum which coordinates fine muscle movement and balance
What is ataxia ?
This is the result of damage to the cerebellum which involves struggling with balance and being wobbly
What is the function of the hypothalamus ?
Integrated function
- Regulated cardiovascular and temperature
- Feeding and drinking
- Sexual behaviour
- Sleep
- Aggression
Gives rise to the pituitary gland which is responsible for the release of hormones
What is the brains sensory switch board/ relay centre ?
Thalamus which relays sensory information to and from the cortical regions
What could happen when the hypothalamus goes wrong ?
- Cannabis munchies
- Erectile dysfunction
- Anorexia
- Diabetes insipidus
- Developmental disorders
What is the function of the corpus callosum and what happens if there is a problem ?
Connects the left and the right hemisphere of the brain. If there is a problem is that the left and right side of the brain will not be able to communicate
- Can lead to seizures
- Cognitive impairment
- Motor problems
