C1- Atomic Structure And The Periodic Table Flashcards
Element
An element cannot be broken down chemically into any simpler substance
Compound
A compound is a group of 2 or more different types of atoms chemically bonded together.
Mixture
A mixture is made up of 2 or more substances (elements or compounds) that are not chemically bonded.
Reactant
A reactant is a substance that we start with before a chemical reaction.
Product
A product is a substance made as a result of a chemical reaction.
Oxidation
Loss of electrons
Reduction
Gain of electrons
How are mixtures separated?
Through physical processes:
Filtration, simple distillation, fractional distillation, chromatography.
Fractional distillation
Separating liquids from a mixture of liquids by boiling off the substances at different temperatures, then condensing and collecting the liquids.
Chromatography
Where small amounts of distilled substances are separated by running a solvent along a material.
Mobile phase
Solvent
Stationary phase
Paper
Rf equation
Rf= distance moved by substance/ distance moved by solvent
Isotope
An atom that has the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons.
Metals form
Positive ions
