C1 - 7 part 2 Flashcards
What is metallic bonding/
When matalsmetals are a lattice of cautions, surrounded by delocalised electrons
What are 3 properties of metallic structures?
1 - Good conductors of electricity
2 - Regular pattern
3 - Can bend have layers that slide over one another
Why are metals good conductors of electricity?
Because there are delocalised electrons in the metal that carry an electrical charge through the metal
What is an alloy?
2 or more metals mixed together
What is a smart alloy?
A smart material that can remember and return to its original shape (also known as shape memory alloys)
What is are some uses for smart alloys?
Braces, glasses and stents
Why are nanoparticles useful?
They have a high surface area to volume ratio
What is the diameter of a nanoparticle?
1 - 100 nm
What is graphene?
A thin layer of carbon atoms (in a hexagonal honeycomb lattice)
