The importance of the Eucharist
The Eucharist is for many Christian denominations the most important sacrament.
Eucharist means ‘thanksgiving’ in Greek. Other names used are Holy Communion, Mass and the Lord’s Supper
The Eucharist remembers the last supper, Jesus’ farewell meal with disciples in the lead up to his crucifixion
He takes ordinary bread and wine and uses the words ‘This is my body’ and ‘This is my blood’
Paul in 1 Cor also states Jesus added ‘For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes again’.
bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit and the instrumentality of the priest.
