c1 Flashcards
how are salts formed
When a metal atom transfers its outer electron to a non-metal atom (like a group 7 atom), salts are formed.
The result is a compound where all the ions have a full outer shell.
transition metal properties
greater strength and hardness than alkali metals
higher melting points-good for cooking
less reactive-iron takes weeks to rust
more mass
transition metal special properties
can form ions with different possible charges e.g. fe^2+, fe^3+
can form different colour compounds
transition metals as catalysts
iron-used in havre process, production of ammonia
platinum and rhodium are used in catalytic converters for cars
relative atomic mass
average mass of an element
it’s weighted by the abundance of its isotopes
relative atomic mass equation
(isotopic abundance * relative mass)/100
what is crystallisation
a separation technique used to separate dissolved solids from a solvent
can make things pure
