C Two Flashcards
What type of bonding is ionic?
metal + non metal
electrons transferred
What type of bonding is covalent?
Non metal + non metal
sharing of electrons
What type of bonding is metallic?
metal + metal
positive ions and delocalised electrons
What is a metal?
positive ions and delocalised electrons that are free to move which conduct electricity and heat, layers slide across each other which makes the metal soft
What is an alloy?
positive ions and delocalised electrons + something else (metal and non metal) distorted layers can’t slide which makes it hard
What is ionic bonding?
giant ionic lattice which have high melting and boiling points which conduct electricity when molten or dissolved as ions must be free to move
What is simple covalent bonding?
EG. o2 co2 h2o h2
low melting/boiling points
gas/liquid at room temp
don’t conduct electricity
What is giant covalent bonding?
graphite, diamond, silican dioxide, carbon nanotube, buckminlerfullercone giant covalent structure high melting/boiling points don't conduct electricity don't dissolve
What is a diamonds structure?
giant covalent lattice
made up of carbon each make 4 bonds
hard
What is graphites structure?
giant covalent compound pure carbon 3 bonds to other carbons soft conducts electricity in sheets space electron in sheets graphite is a single sheet
Carbon Nano tubes?
made of carbon
3 bonds
hard
used for drug delivary
Buckminsterfllerene?
lubricant
reinforcement
polymers in chains?
cross links
fixed in place
slide across each other
polymers with no chains/cross links?
can’t slide across each other
melt
