C-reactive protein shakes Flashcards
For what i believe is the third time, what, darling self, is C-reactive protein?
A prototypic acute-phase reactant with HUGE increases in serum concentration following tissue infection or injury. Recognition includes phospholipids on pathogens and damaged self cells.
WHAT ARE the serum pentraxins? hint: there are 4
CRP, serum amyloid p-component (SAP), pentraxins and lectins.
What is the function of CRP?
Non-specific immune defence. Serum conc increases 1000 fold in response to infection and injury. CAN ACTIVATE COMPLEMENT.
What happens for CRP to activate the complement?
when crp is bound to a suitable ligand, it binds C1q and activates complement via the CLASSICAL route.
How does it go on with immune clearance?
it recognises receptors on immune cells, leading to the clearing of bound ligands.
Clinical aspects of CRP?
Universally used as a clinical indicator of tissue infection/injury/inflammation. NO CRP DEFICIENCY HAS EVER BEEN FOUND.
CRP vs AUTOIMMUNE?
Nope son, recognition and removal of nuclear debris prevents generation of autoantibodies
CVD?
CRP implicated, but shit son, causal or effect? wILL WE EVER TRULY KNOW
