C/P Flashcards
1
Q
what do hydrogen bonds require?
A
- hydrogen bond donor: molecule with a H bonded to a highly electroneg. atom such as oxygen or nitrogen
- hydrogen bond acceptor: electronegative atom (N, O, F) with an available lone pair of electrons
2
Q
how to find pH from molarity
A
pH = -log(H+)
pH = the negative log of the concentration of H+ ions
- ex: if 0.01 M HCl, what is the pH?
3
Q
find the pH of a solution of a 2.3x10-4 molar solution of NaOH
A
gameplan: (OH-) –> pOH –> pH
4
Q
how to handle logs on the MCAT?
A
- log (#) –> log base 10
- so 10 to what power = # ???
- –
- negative logs
- log (0.1) = 1 because 1 x 10^-1 = 0.1
- log of 1x10^-4 = 4, - log of 1x10^-11 = 11 etc.
*
- log of 1x10^-4 = 4, - log of 1x10^-11 = 11 etc.
