what is a tithing?
group of 10 men who are responsible for each others actions
strengths of tithings
prevent people from committing crimes otherwise everyone was fined
weaknesses of tithings
unjust/unfair for those who haven’t committed the crime
what is the hue and cry?
anyone who saw the crime round up help to catch the criminal
strengths of the hue and cry
more chance of catching the criminal as it is in a big group
weaknesses of the hue and cry
may not catch the criminal, the whole village gets fined
what is the jury
locals decide whether the accused is guilty
strengths of the jury
if well liked they could have the jury in their favour
weaknesses of the jury

what is a trial by ordeal
if the jury couldn’t decide then the accused were sent to the church
trial by hot iron
taken by women, hold iron and walk three paces, if infested then they’re guilty if not then they’re innocent
trial by hot water
taken by men, grab an object from the boiling water, if infested then they’re guilty if not then innocent
trial by cold water
usually taken by men, held by a rope above water, if sink then innocent float then guilty
trial by blessed bread
taken by priests, if priest choked they were guilty if not then they weren’t
