Caricature
Exaggerated aspects of a character or people for comical effect.
Chiasmus
A word or phrase that is repeated in reverse order.
Colloquialism
The use of informal language and slang.
Dialect
The language used by people of a specific area or class.
Epiphany
A moment of sudden realisation by a character.
Epistrophe
The repetition of words or phrases at the ends of sentences.
Note - the exact opposite of Anaphora.
Epizeuxis
Words or phrases that are repeated in quick succession for emphasis.
Euphamism
Using less provocative or more mild language to refer to or describe an explicit or unpleasant topic.
Flashback
An interjected scene that takes the narrative back in time.
Foreshadowing
Hinting at future events to come in a narrative to build tension.
Hyperbole
A statement or word or phrase that is an obvious and intentional exaggeration.
Hypophora
When a write raises a question and immediately provides an answer.
Idiom
A figure of speech that doesn’t make sense if taken literally.
Imagery
A compilation of details that enable a reader to picture an event.
Imperative sentence
A sentence giving instructions or advice.
