Allegory
A figure of speech in which abstract ideas and principles are described in terms of characters, figures and events - usually to teach a moral lesson.
Alliteration
The repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words in succession.
Allusion
A brief reference, ie to a person or an idea.
Ambiguity
Any word, phrase, or sentence that can be interpreted in more than one way.
Analogy
An elaborate comparison between two disparate subjects, more elaborate than a metaphor or simile.
Anaphora
The repetition of the first part of a sentence.
Antanaclasis
A word or phrase that is repeated multiple times yet holds a different meaning each time.
Antecedent
A word referring to an earlier phrase or clause.
Anthimeria
When a word is used in a new grammatical way ie the words “heading” and “purplish” are examples of Anthimeria.
Anthropomorphism
Ascribing human qualities to a non-human entity (typically an animal).
Antiphrasis
A phrase or word used in an ironic way that’s opposite to its meaning.
Antithesis
Two contrasting ideas, people or events put together for effect.
Assonance
Words near each other with repeating vowel sounds.
Asyndeton
Words that are put together in a sentence (usually a list) that aren’t separated with a conjunction - that are usually separated with a comma.
