Q
  1. Decentralising employee relations
A

• The Australian system has had a strong tradition of resolving disputes by the use of centralised power (e.g. industrial relations commissions or tribunals that made a ruling on the matter in dispute).
-The tradition of centralised awards and referring disputes to a third party for arbitration is in the process of change.

  • Starting in 1991, a series of federal government laws and Industrial Relations Commission (IRC) decisions encouraged employers and unions to negotiate their own wage agreements at the level of the individual firm.
  • The development was known as enterprise bargaining or workplace bargaining. It is a form of collective bargaining.
