C. Cardiovascular Drugs Flashcards
what are cardiovascular drugs?
Cardiovascular drugs are the common name of compounds used to treat different heart disorders (such as congestive heart failure, angina, or arrhythmia) or diseases of the vascular system (e.g., hypertension).
What is an inotropic medication do?
Work on the heart muscle by influencing contractility or the strength of the contractions
What does a dromotropic medication do?
Affects conduction of the heart
What does a positive chronotropic drug do?
accelerates heart rate
What type of chronotrope drug is digoxin?
Negative chronotrope-decreases HR
What type of inotropic drug is digoxin?
Positive inotrope-increases contractility
What will increase a patient’s risk for Digoxin toxicity?
hypo or hyperkalemia and hypercalcemia will increase the risk for Dig toxicity
What is the apical pulse have to be for digoxin?
> 60 beats for 1 min
Types of cardiovascular medications include:
- Antianginal
- Positive Inotropic
- Antihypertensives
- Antidysrhythmics
- Thrombolytics
Occurs when the supply of O2 and nutrients in the blood is insufficient to meet the demands of the heart; Heart muscle “aches”
Angina pectoris
Types of chest pain
- Vise-like
- Crushing
- Radiating
Types of angina
- Chronic stable
- Unstable
- Vasospastic
Classic or effort angina
Chronic stable
Preinfarction or crescendo angina
Unstable
Nitrates used to treat acute anginal attacks
Rapid-acting
