BZ1006 - L4 Organising the Natural World Flashcards
Define Taxonomy
A formal hierarchial system for naming and classifying species that reflects their common descent
ie. Closely related spiecies are grouped most closely together
What parts of the organisms full classification must be written in italics? (or underlined when handwritten)
The genus and the species names
What is the order of the ranks? (Kingdom, species, order etc)
Kingdom (kids) Phylum (playing) Class (carelessly) Order (on) Family (freeways) Genus (get) Species (squished)
Why is latin used for genus and species names?
because it is an ancient language that in not changing
ie. no words added/removed. meanings havnt changed
What are the 3 issues with grouping 2 species as a single species?
- The population is thought to be bigger
- Lack of conservation attention
- Assumptions made about toxins/venoms
What are the 2 issues with having 2 species that should be the same?
- Overestimate of diversity
2. Conservation attempts made when not needed (eg. mahogony gliders = squirrel gliders)
