Which 5 groups of patients are at higher risk of UTIs?
Patients with catheters.
Older people (older men who can’t fully void their urine).
Patients with urinary calculi.
Patients with foreign bodies in the urinary system e.g. stents, catheters.
Patients with abnormal urinary tract structures.
What is dysuria?
Burning pain on passing urine.
How does bladder cancer commonly present?
Painless intermittent frank (macroscopic) haematuria.
If there nitrites on a urine dipstick, what does this suggest?
Infection in the urine.
Why are you better prescribing trimethoprim than nitrofurantoin for a UTI in men?
The infection could be in the prostate.
Nitrofurantoin has low tissue penetration in the prostate whereas trimethoprim has good penetration into the prostate.
Why can proteus bacteria cause the formation of renal stones?
Proteus produces urease causing the urine to become more alkaline which allows stones to form.
What is urinary hesitancy?
Difficulty in beginning the flow of urine.
Associated with prostate enlargement in men and with narrowing of the urethral opening in women.
May be caused by emotional stress in either men or women.
What is nocturia?
Wake up during the night to urinate.
What is enuresis?
Involuntary urinary at night.
What is nocturnal polyuria?
Produce more urine through the night than they used to.
