What is butter?
Butter:
- Solid fat.
- Melts and becomes softer when heated.
- Make butter by churning cream quickly until lumps form.
Where should butter be stored?
Butter should be stored:
- In refrigerator away from odorous foods.
- Cover butter in refrigerator as air can cause it to spoil.
What are the 2 types of butter?
Types of butter:
- Unsalted.
- Salted.
What us butter a source of?
Butter is a source of:
- Fat (mainly saturated).
- Vitamin A and D.
- Sodium ( salted butter).
What is butter used for?
Uses of butter:
- Spread on foods to add flavour and moisture.
- Cream with sugar to add flavour and air when making cakes.
- Shallow-fry foods to stop foods sticking to pans.
- Make pastry through shortening (when butter is rubbed into flour to get crumbly texture).
- Melt butter and pour over cooked vegetables to improve the flavour.
How is butter made?
Butter is made by churning milk or cream to separate the fat globules from the buttermilk.
