Leading
Leadership
Is the process of guiding and motivating others towards the achievement of the organization’s goals and objectives
It involves the influence one person exerts over another person
Leadership consists of:
Doing the right things
Appointment “by the people”
Motivate through intrinsic processes
Derive power from their followers perception of their skills, as well as their personality and appeal
What is leaderships
(also included on card 2)
The social relationship between two or more individuals where there is distinct level of influence visible to further the achievement of goals
The elements of leadership
Legitimate power :Derived from a person’s position
Reward power: Derived from an individual’s position to award or withhold rewards(salary raises, the greater the reward power a manager possesses)
Coercive power: Derived from an individual’s ability to threaten and affect negative consequences(retrenchment)
Expert power: Derived from an individual’s extensive knowledge, experience/professional ability
Referent power: Derived from an individual’s personal charisma and the respect and admiration it inspires from others
Management consists of:
Doing things right
Process of planning, organizing, leading and control
Are appointed to their roles
Derive their power from the organization and their position
Motivate through extrinsic processes
Technology to facilitate leadership:
1.Tech creates the opportunity for a leader to be more effective at leading and motivating followers
2.Embracing Tech can be one of the most successful tools for managers aspiring to be leaders
3.Leaders often need to demonstrate skills in a variety of virtual communication methods

Leadership types and styles
Formal vs informal leaders
Formal Leaders
Are recognized by those outside the group as the official leader
Are appointed by the org to serve in a formal capacity
Informal Leaders
Are acknowledged by the group as their leader
Exert considerable influence on the team members, even though they hold no formal/official leadership position within the org
Autocratic leaders
Directive leaders and allow very limited input from subordinates
Participative leaders
Share decision-making with group members and actively encourage the discussion of issues and appropriate alternatives
Laissez-faire leadership
Delegate all authority and control to subordinates
Transformational leaders
Aim to inspire their followers to change through their own personal values , vision, passion and beliefs
Visionary leaders
Influence others through either an emotional/intellectual attraction to the leader’s vision of what “can be”
