What is classified as a first degree burn?

A

-Affect only the epidermis, or outer layer of skin.

The burn site is red, painful, dry, and with no blisters.

What is classified as a second degree burn?

A
  • They affect the epidermis and dermis, site often appearing swollen and blistered.
  • The area may also look wet, and the blisters can break open, forming a scab-like tissue.

What is classified as a third degree burn?

A

-Destroys the epidermis and dermis. May also damage the underlying bones, muscles, and tendons.

The burn site appears white or charred.

There is no sensation in the area since the nerve endings are destroyed.
