Thermal Burn
Caused by conduction or convection. From hot liquid, fire, or steam.
Electrical Burn
Electrical current passing through the body w/ an entrance and exit wound. Ex; lighting strike.
Chemical Burn
Chemical compounds come in contact with the body. Ex; sulfuric acid, lye, HCL, and gasoline.
Radiation Burn
External beam of radiation therapy. DNA is altered in exposed tissues.
What are the zones of injury?
Zone of coagulation: area with the most severe injury
Zone of stasis: area of less severe injury
Zone of hyperemia: Area around the stasis that is inflamed but can fully recover
Burn classifications?
Superficial, Superficial Partial Thickness, Deep Partial Thickness, Full Thickness, and Subdermal Burn

Way to approximate the percentage of the body affected by a burn. Does NOT account for severity.
Adult Values for rule of nines
Head and Neck: 9%
Anterior Trunk: 18%
Posterior Truck: 18%
Bi Anterior arm, forearm, and hand: 9%
Bi Posterior arm, forearm, and hand: 9%
Genital Region: 1%
Bi Anterior leg and foot: 18%
Bi Posterior leg and foot: 18%
