* Nutrition status is the focus
First action when even a small burn is suspected
Check airway
Indication of pulmonary injury from burns
- Smoky breath smell
- Drooling
- RR change
- Dysphagia
- Stridor
- Cough
- Hoarse voice
Wheezing disappears in severe burns from rapid obstruction
Do not wait for S&S of hypoxia to intubate!
Carbon monoxide poisoning: Mild
- Headache
- ALOC
- Decreased visual acuity
- Slightly breathless
Carbon monoxide poisoning: Moderate
- Headache
- Tinnitus
- Nausea
- Drowsy
- Vertigo
- ALOC
- Stupor
- Irritable
- HOTN
- Tachycardia (irregular)
- Depressed ST
- Pale, red-purple skin
Carbon monoxide poisoning: Fatal
60-80%
Carbon monoxide poisoning: Severe
- Coma
- Convulsion
- Unstable
When to medicate before dressing changes
Burns
30 min before
Vaccine given after burns
Tetanus
