Burns Flashcards
Classify burns according to depth
-Epidermis
-Superficial dermis
-deep dermis
-Full thickness
Which burns are painful?
-Epidermis
-superficial dermis
(Deep dermis is less painful and full thickness is painless)
Which burns heal with scar?
-deep dermis
-full thickness
(And both heal after more than 2 weeks)
How are burns classified according to surface area?
By the rule of nine
When to transfer patient to hospital?
-Surface area >5% in children and 10% in adults
-Type of burn: full thickness, circumferential, deep
-Cause of burn: Electric, chemical
-Site of burn: face and perineum
When to give patient fluids?
> 10% in children and >15% in adult
What is the type of fluid given in a burn patient? And how to measure it?
Hartman solution.
Measured by the parkland formula
In adults (2 x wt. x surface area)
And in children (3 x wt. x surface area)
Divided into 2 halves ( one in 1st 8h and one in the next 16h)
How to follow up on the Hartman infusion?
By CVP measurement and urinary catheter
(Adult 0.5ml/kg/h, children 1ml/kg/h)
What are the complications of burns?
-Acute gastric dilatation
-Curling ulcer
-Most dangerous (sepsis)
-Most urgent (circumferential burn)
-Facial burn (causing laryngeal edema)
-Graft infection
-Lower limb edema
What are the most affected organs by electrical burns?
-Heart
-Kidney
-Muscles
