Burger Flashcards
Generalisability
Done in 2009 (modern)
Used 30 more people and ages ranged 20-81 - pop validity
No gender bias (2/3 women)
Excluded many from his study (emotional issues or those with education in psych) - may have affected results - Milgram used a wider range of types of people
Procedure
Start volt only 15v, goes up in 15v intervals
Heart condition indicated by learner, experimenter says not harmful
At 75v sounds of pain made
150v learner cries of chest pain
If teacher moves to 165v experiment stopped
Results
70% prepared to go to 165v
Empathy didn’t make difference to obedience
Results still stand if milgram experiment
Ethics
Better as people didn’t have to go all the way to 450v
Filtered out participants who were likely to be distressed
However still no informed consent - deceit
Studied approved by university of ethics panel - could shit down study if anyone felt harmed
Aim
Find out if Milgrams ‘63 study reoccur in ‘09 pps
See if variables - empathy and locus of control- influence obedience
See if presence of a disobedient model effect obedience levels
Conclusion
Milgrams results still stand
People still influenced by situational factors to obey authority even if it goes against values
Application
Demonstrates how obedience to authority works - can be used to increase obedience in school and prisons
Authority figures should wear a symbol of authority
Testing people for locus of control might identify people most likely to be disobedient
Validity
Lacked ecological validity - artifical task
Valid as pps paid in full before so no social pressure
Stopping at 150v May be invalid as pps may have stopped further
