Burawoy's Lecture video Flashcards
Burawoy’s typology for sociology
¬ Professional Sociology-a scientific sociology created by and for sociologists
¬ Critical Sociology- interrogates the assumptions- methodological, philosophical, and theoretical- of the research programs of professional sociology
¬ Policy sociology – the application of professional sociology to the interests and problems of clients (organizaions, agencies, corportations)
¬ Public sociology- endeavors to bring sociology into dialogue with audiences beyond the academy, an open dialogue in which both sides deepen their understanding of public issues.
Public sociology
¬ Public sociology is communication with publics beyond the academy
¬ Burawoy’s vision for public sociology is one that is based on reflexive knowledge and ventures beyond the walls of the university
¬ The communication must be; 1. Within publics themselves (internal conversations) and 2. With sociologists
¬ The focus of public sociology is to convince people (general public) that what they experience in their individual lives are the product of broader forces that can be brought under human control
2 forms of public sociology (finish)
¬ Traditional public sociology: where sociologists target large invisible publics through newspaper publications, interviews, tv shows, books, blogs which is often mediated
¬ Burawoy’s call centres on organic public sociology which is a direct and unmediated (not done)
