Buoyancy of Objects (Phase 2) Weight of Object in Water Flashcards
Does the weight of an object change underwater?
Submerging an object in a liquid does not change the mass of an object. However, it does effect the weight that would register on a scale. The buoyant force of a fluid exerts upwards on a sumereged object.
An object weighs on the surface 20kg.
The object has an upward force of 10.3kg.
How much does the object weigh underwater?
20kg (weight out water) - 10.3kg (upward force)
= 9.7kg (weight in water)
An object has an upward force of 10.3kg in seawater.
How much water does the object displace?
10.3kg (upward force) ÷ 1.03kg (seawater)
= 10litres (displaced)
An object weighs on the surface 50kg.
The object has an upward force of 27kg.
How much does the object weigh underwater?
50kg (weight out water) - 27kg (upward force)
= 23kg (weight in water)
An object has an upward force of 27kg in fresh water.
How much water does the object displace?
27kg (upward force) ÷ 1kg (fresh water)
= 27litres (displaced)
An object weighs on the surface 85kg.
The object has an upward force of 66.95kg.
How much does the object weigh underwater?
85kg (weight out water) - 66.95kg (upward force)
= 18.05kg (weight in water)
An object has an upward force of 66.95kg in seawater.
How much water does the object displace?
66.95kg (upward force) ÷ 1.03kg (seawater)
= 65litres (displaced)
An object weighs on the surface 122kg.
The object has an upward force of 113kg.
How much does the object weigh underwater?
122kg (weight out water) - 113kg (upward force)
= 9kg (weight in water)
An object has an upward force of 113kg in fresh water.
How much water does the object displace?
113kg (upward force) ÷ 1kg (fresh water)
= 113litres (displaced)
An object weighs on the surface 153.4kg.
The object has an upward force of 104.5kg.
How much does the object weigh underwater?
153.4kg (weight out water) - 104.5kg (upward force)
= 48.9kg (weight in water)
An object has an upward force of 104.5kg in seawater.
How much water does the object displace?
104.5kg (upward force) ÷ 1.03kg (seawater)
= 101.45litres (displaced)
An object weighs on the surface 500kg.
The object has an upward force of 120kg.
How much does the object weigh underwater?
500kg (weight out water) - 120kg (upward force)
= 380kg (weight in water)
An object has an upward force of 120kg in fresh water.
How much water does the object displace?
120kg (upward force) ÷ 1kg (fresh water)
= 120litres (displaced)
An object weighs on the surface 3kg.
The object has an upward force of 2.06kg.
How much does the object weigh underwater?
3kg (weight out water) - 2.06kg (upward force)
= 0.94kg (weight in water)
An object has an upward force of 2.06kg in seawater.
How much water does the object displace?
2.06kg (upward force) ÷ 1.03kg (seawater)
= 2litres (displaced)
