Q

Kantian view on Corporate social responsibility?

A
  • Kantian says an action is only good if it comes from goodwill and not anything else so companies that sponsor charitable events so they can promote their reputations would not be considered ethical
  • Furthermore reason for them caring about pollution or noise or the safety of their workers is primarily concern for their own reputation so that they make profit Kant would not think this is good

Q

What is Good ethic is good business?

A
  • ‘GEIGB’ is a slogan that claims doing the right thing will make a business more attractive and increase its profits because customers will like and trust it
  • Good ethics can be difficult for business because sometimes an action that benefits a group of people can have a completely opposite effect on others e.g. making milk lower price for customers can be good but harmful for dairy farmers

Q

What is Kantian view of GEIGB?

A
  • Kantian approach to GEIGB would say that business like individuals should do the right thing just because it’s the right thing and concerns and competition and profit is irrelevant
  • However it’s difficult as companies to survive in a competitive, capitalist market trying not to treat people as a mean to an end is a difficult principle to apply in business because employees and suppliers and customers are used as part to make profit

Q

What is Kantian view on Globalisation?

A
  • Kantian ethics might help business to adopt absolute guidelines for ensuring the wellbeing of workers around the work
  • Rule for business Kantian might adopt such as protecting the autonomy and rationality of every worker providing a salary sufficient for independent living
  • However Kantian Ethics may be difficult to apply because business ethics people have to treat workers as a mean to an end and there are often situations in business where duties conflict
17
Q

What is Utilitarian view on Globalisation?

A
  • Utilitarian ethics might argue that on a large scale good is done to developing countries from globalisation greatly outweighs the harm
  • Everyone benefits when goods can be produced cheaply enough for most people to buy them and everyone benefits when people are employed and paid wages
  • However it could be argued that the rich gain a lot more than the poor through globalisation and overall ‘greatest happiness’ might be achieved and the poor are exploited
18
Q

Strength of utilitarian when applied to business ethics?

A
  • According to Hedonic calculus and act utilitarianism principle and laws have to be considered only so far as they provide utility and beneficial consequences meaning there is flexibility to allow good business decision
  • Utilitarianism provide best approach to business ethics according to rule utilitarian principles and laws have to be accepted meaning business cannot act completely outside of accepted rules
  • Utilitarianism in general provides the best approach as it might accept globalisation the spread of capitalism enable humans to flourish whilst consumerism provides the opportunity to maximise pleasure
19
Q

Weakness of Utilitarian applied to business ethics?

A
  • Overall goal of business is making profits the best approach is simply the one that focuses on the maximisation of profits.Mill would argue that money is a lower pleasure
  • It will allow the majority to exploit the minority so issues such as exploitation and sweatshop may be accepted.Utilitarianism allows for theft and corruption if it makes people happy
  • Hedonic calculus is too long and complex to use in making real world decisions
20
Q

Strength of Kantian when applied to business ethics ?

A
  • Whistle blowing importance of honesty and promise keeping
  • Globalization using countries with fewer human rights act as a mean of cheap labour
  • Cannot universalize exploiting every nation and every person- no goodwill or duty
  • Kant promotes the importance of equality and globalization often promotes inequality
  • Kant also opposed slavery on the grounds that consent requires autonomy example in Rana plaza they were told to go back to work
21
Q

Weaknesses of Kantian ethics when applied to business ethics?

A
  • Kant idea is impractical as in today society putting people over profit sounds nice but arguably isn’t realistic
  • Conflicting duties where employer has duty to his employees but also has a duty to shareholders and to the customers
  • Maxims can be manipulated and pretty much allow anything
  • Kant’s focus on the importance of motives ensures that corporate social responsibility is genuine and not just an act or marketing ploy to attract customers
