Building Construction Flashcards
What are live loads?
Equipment, people, movement, and materials that are not permanently attached to a building.
What are dead loads?
Weight of all materials and equipment that are permanently attached to a building.
What is a concentrated load?
Load that is applied to a small area.
What is a distributed load?
Load applied equally over a broad area.
What is an impact load?
Load that is in motion when applied.
What is a design load?
Load in which the engineer planned for in the structural design.
What is an undesigned load?
Load that was not planned for. Could be caused by remodeling or change in occupancy.
What is a fire load?
The amount of things able to burn in a building
What is an axial load?
Load that is transmitted through the center of an element and runs perpendicular to the element.
What is an eccentric load?
Applied perpendicular to an element. Not through the center.
What is a torsion load?
Load that is applied offset to an element causing a twisting stress to the material.
What are the four basic materials used in building construction?
Wood
Steel
Concrete
Masonry
What is type 1 construction called?
Fire resistive
What is the fire rating generally for type 1 fire resistive construction?
3-4 hours
What type of buildings are made of type 1 construction?
Buildings where a high volume of people are expected to occupy it.
( high rise, sporting arenas)
