Brainstorming
Generating ideas and info based on word associations. After making a list, group like terms together and label group accordingly.
Prewriting
Generation of ideas before formal writing
Free-writing
Unstructured, associative form of writing that closely mirrors brainstorming
Looping
Doing several rounds of free-writing on increasingly narrow topics
Clustering
Explores relationship between ideas by creating a physical “map” of concepts and their relationships to one another
What are the stages of the writing process?

Dialogue journal
Journal kept by two people and exchanged after each entry
Conference writing
Activity that encourages writers to discuss and share their work with an individual or group.
Guided writing
Individual or group activity where students use word maps to organize their ideas before writing. Steps are:
- pick a topic to write about
- create a word map and have students write about the topic using the words from the map
- encourage inventive spelling to focus on ideas not correct grammar
Word maps
Used to show relationships between words. Related words include:
- words with similar meanings
- words that share the same topic or theme
- words that expresses alternate meanings of the focus word
Fluency in writing
Transfer of the flow of speech go the written word. Ability to visualize spoken words, phrases, and sentences as they are heard and write them in their entirety, as opposed to writing them syllable by syllable
