Common Pneumonia bugs
Streptococcus pneumoniae
-most common bacterial pneumonia
-rust coloured sputum
Haemophilus influenzae
If HAP - pseudomonas or MRSA
(bronchitis usually viral RSV/flu/rhinovirus)
Klebsiella pneumoniae
Redcurrant jelly sputum/haemoptysis
Rare atypical
Cavitating pneumonia esp in upper lobes
More likely in alcoholics, elderly, diabetics, immunosuppressed
Legionella
From water sources, notifiable to public health
Atypical pneumonia with arthralgia, fatigue, thin watery sputum, loose stool
Test with urinary antigen
Mycoplasma pneumoniae
Atypical with flu-like prodrome, consolidation in one lower lobe
Risk of triggering erythema multiforme (target lesions)
Pneumocystic Jirovecii
= PCP
Fungal pneumonia in HIV patients
Dropping sats on exertion
Moraxhella catarrhalis
Rare cause of bronchopneumonia in pts with underlying chronic lung disease
Giardia
Parasite GI bug
Steatorrhea and bloating, 2-3 weeks
Food/water
E coli
O157:H7 strain can cause haemolytic uraemic syndrome
Bloody or non bloody diarrhoea
Other systems can be affected eg urinary/sepsis
Bacillus cereus
Watery diarrhoea
Often ingestion of undercooked rice
Salmonella
Gastroenteritis with or without dysentery (blood)
Systemic infection/sepsis = typhoid fever
Contaminated meat, eggs, milk
Campylobacter
Gastroenteritis with dysentery (blood)
Contaminated poultry
Guillan Barre syndrome assoc
Cholera
Rice water diarrhoea
Can cause death by dehydration
Contaminated water, rare in developed world
