Buffers Flashcards
1
Q
What is a buffer solution?
A
- Resists small changes in pH when small amounts of acid and alkali are added
- So keeps pH relatively constant
- Can consist of a weak acid - conjugate base or a weak base - conjugate acid

Q
Applications of buffers
A
- In the body HCO3 - acts as a buffer for our blood
- Too higher [H+] could cause acidosis
CO2 (g) + H2O (l) ⇌ H+ (aq) + HCO3- (aq)
If increase in [H+], EQBM shifts left to restore EQBM, reduces conc of H+, keeps pH of blood constant.
If decrease, EQBM shifts right til restored, increases H+ conc and keeps pH of blood constant
