Buffer solutions Flashcards
What is a buffer solution
Solution that can resist small changes in pH
They will return to a nominal pH value when small volumes of acid or base are added to them
How are buffer solutions prepared
Buffer solution is prepared using 2 solutions
Weak acid and salt of weak acid or weak base and salt of weak base
How does buffer solution work
Works using an equilibrium system between the weak electrolyte and the salt of the weak electrolyte
What is buffer capacity
Refers to how much acid or alkali can be added to a buffer solution before there is a drastic change in the pH value
The more concentrated the reagents used for the buffer are the higher the b capacity will be
Applications of buffer system
biological systems
Chemical reactions
Analytical chemistry
Industrial processes
Biological buffer system?
Bicarbonate buffering system regulates blood pH ensuring our cells function optimally. Also moonlights as an ocean buffer keeping marine pH in check
Chemical buffer system
Buffers play referee in chemical reactions they stabilise the reaction mixtures preventing wild pH swings
Analytical chemistry (buffer system)
From titrations to enzyme assays they keep the pH steady allowing accurate results
Industrial processes (buffer systems)
In brewing pharmaceuticals and wastewater treatment buffers maintain optimal conditions
2 types of buffer systems
Phosphate buffer system -
Bicarbonate buffer system - acid base helps maintain ph balance in blood
