What is Buerger’s Disease?
When blood vessels swell and prevent blood flow, causing clots to form. Relatively rare disease of arteries and veins in the arms and legs.
How many individuals have Buerger’s Disease? And where is it more prevalent, and why?
12.6-20 individual per 100,000 in the U.S. more prevalent in Asia and middle east due to higher tobacco use
Where is the first appearance of Buerger’s Disease
first appears in fingers and toes
What are the risk factors of Buerger’s Disease?
smoking, age (middle age men onset 40-45 yr old), sex (10-1 mostly men)
What is the clinical presentation of Buerger’s Disease?
intermittent claudication progressing to pain while resting due to decreased capillary and venous refilling time. This causes change in color due to gangrene and decreased blood flow.
What is gangrene?
condition when blood flow to tissue is cut off, causing tissue to break down and die. Results in a green-ish black color
