The Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and passing into parinirvana (the final state of nirvana)
How do Buddhists celebrate Wesak?
May light up their homes with candles, or may out up decorations
What do the Buddhists offer?
They make offerings to the Buddha, and offerings of food, candles and flowers to the monks in the local monastery.
What happens in Singapore?
Caged birds and animals are released as a symbol of liberation and it signifies release from past troubles and wrong doings.
What is Parinirvana Day?
Remembers Buddha; passing into Parinirvana, celebrated in February.
A more solemn occasion than Wesak.
What does Parinirvana Day provide for Buddhists?
A chance to reflect on their own future death and remember friends/family who may have recently passed away.
What is the Mahaparinirvana Sutra?
An important Buddhist scripture that describes the Buddha’s last days.
How may Buddhists spend Parinirvana Day?
Readibg this text and meditating at home, or joining others in temples for puja and meditation.
Some places will organise retreats.
