“Three Marks of Existence” (tri-lakshana)
- impermanence (anitya)
- suffering (duhka)
- not-self (anatman)
4 cardinal virtues
- temperance
- prudence
- courage
- justice
Mahayana
- “great vehicle”
- inclusive of normal people
- “Bodhisattva” (enlightenment being) idea: attain buddhahood for other beings
- don’t have a grand universal view
“Four sights”
when sakamuni ventured out into the city, he saw 4 things that made him want to attain enlightenment
-the feeble man
-the sick man
-a corpse, surrounded by loved ones
-a monk
inspired him to become monk and seek the truth
parinirvana
nirvana-after-death, only achieved if you attain nirvana during life
triratna (three jewels)
lay people took refuge in the 3 jewels:
- buddha (teacher)
- dharma (teachings)
- Sanga (followers)
tripitika
the sacred book of Buddhism
King milinda (Menander)
famous dialogue between Nagasena and the king
- nagasena claimed his name is only a word, not him
- word is just a sound
- milinda tried humiliating him
- nagasena argues by describing all parts of the body is not nagasena, so how is he nagasena
Anatman
“not-self”
- buddhism denies existence of a permanent entity that remains constant
- there is no “I”, nothing beyond the body
- personality analyzed into 5 aggregates (skandhas)
- nothing permanent/essential about us
samsara
endless cycle of death and rebirth
bodhisattva
- main focus of mahayana
- process of becoming Buddha slowly over the course of lives
- fills the universe
- seek enlightenment for all living beings
- mythological superheroes
