What is Siddharma Gautama?
Founder of Buddhism, prophecised to either by an emperor or holy man. Realised that desire equals suffering, and sought tot end suffering by achieving nirvana / enlightenment
What is in the tripitaka?
vinaya pitaka, sutra pitaka, abhidhamma pitaka
What is in the vinaya pitaka?
sutra-vibhayana: rules, explanations
handhaka - regulations for communal living, clothing, food
parivara - extra precerpts
What is in the sutra pitaka?
5 nikayas, (sections) that include myths, stories, sayings and teachings related to Buddha
What is in the abhidhamma pitaka?
7 separate works that reflect on early doctrines of Buddhism from a philosophical perspective
Significance of the noble eightfold path
It is the direct means to nirvana, and brings a release from the cycle of samsara
Significance of the six perfections
Give guidance on how to live a moral life, which helps achieve enlightenment
What is the middle way?
Teaching the dharma by the middle. Avoid pleasure, lust and torture
