- refrain from false speech
- refrain from intoxicants which lead to carelessness
Reincarnation
rebirth into another life
Karma
actions consequentially determine rebirth
Dharma
universal truth common to all people at all times, proclaimed by the Buddha
Nirvana
the extinction of desire, hatred, and ignorance, and ultimately of suffering and rebirth
Three Marks of Existence
- impermanence - instability
- dissatisfaction - everything leads to suffering
- no soul - people can and do change in life
Four Noble Truths
- truth of suffering
- truth of cause of suffering
- truth of cessation of suffering
- truth of path to cessation of suffering
Eightfold Path
Ethics:
- right ACTION
- right SPEECH
- right LIVELIHOOD
Meditation:
- right MINDFULNESS

Human rights
The Five Precepts support concept of human rights
Belief in Karmic consequences promote fair treatment and respect for all lives as equal
World view
CYCLICAL
- reincarnated into another body after death
- what a person becomes is a result of their actions and deeds - Karma
- ultimate goal: transcend desire, cease suffering and escape samsara to nirvana, the state of non-being
- human life precious as it is an advantageous existence, unlike other forms of life
