Buccal Delivery Flashcards
What areas of the mouth are karatinised
Gingiva and hard palate
Why are areas of the mouth keratinised?
Areas are under physical and chemical stress
What cells make up keratinised tissue?
Stratified squamous
Which area of mouth has best absorption and why?
Floor of mouth-thin and has saliva
What area of the mouth (non keratinised) is thickest but has good diffusivity?
Buccal mucosa (lining mucosa)- non organised low ceramide (keratin) content
What is an example of special mucosa?
Tongue (tastebuds)
What two parts of the mouth make up the Buccal region?
Gingiva and Buccal mucosa
What area makes up the sublingual region?
Under tongue
What is the function of saliva?
Cleansing
Moisten food
Chemical digestion
Antibacterial
How much saliva is produced daily?
1 litre
What are advantages of Buccal delivery?
Bypass FPM- high bioavailability
Buccal mucosa had rich blood supply
Can stop administration by removal
Can be sustained release by holding in place for period of time
What gland produces thick saliva and why is it thick
Sublingual gland- high glycoprotein content
What are examples of OTC Buccal delivery?
Buccastem (prochlorperazine)
-for nausea and vom
-mechanical retention between lip and Gingiva
-via mucoadhesion
Nicotinell/ niquitin
-gum
-bite (slow till taste), park (between cheek and gum), bite (when taste fades)
What is mucoadhesion?
Bioadhesion with a mucus gel interface
