What is bronchiectasis?
what is the most common cause in the UK
A
- permanent dilation of the bronchial tree
- obstructive condition
- secondary to chronic inflammation or infection
- in the UK most common cause is CF

What are causes of bronchiectasis ?
A
- post-infective: tuberculosis, measles, pertussis, 2.pneumonia
- cystic fibrosis
- bronchial obstruction e.g. lung cancer/foreign body
- immune deficiency: selective IgA, hypogammaglobulinaemia
- allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA)
- ciliary dyskinetic syndromes: Kartagener’s syndrome, Young’s syndrome

What is the management of bronchiectasis?
A
- assess for treatable causes e.g immune deficiency
- physical training (e.g. inspiratory muscle training) (non CF)
- drainage
- abx for exacerbations and long term in severe cases
- bronchodilators in selected cases
- immunisation
- surgery if localised disease
