What is an empire?
A group of countries under the control of a single ruler or country
What is a colony?
A country or territory under the control of another country and occupied by settlers from that country
What is imperialism?
A policy of actively seeking to gain territory and build and empire
What is a Protectorate?
A state that is controlled and protected by another country and occupied by settlers
What is a dominion?
Self-governing territories within the British Empire of equal status united by a common allegiance of the crown
What are mandates?
Territories transferred from the control of one country to another by the League of Nations following World War 1
What is a commonwealth?
A group of independent countries consisting of the UK together with states that were previously part of the British empire, and dependencies
When was the British empire at its peak?
1922
How much did the British empire rule over at its peak?
458 million, 1/5 of the worlds population at the time
