Order of soldier ranks in British Army
(Recruit), Private, Lance Corporal, Corporal, Sergeant, Staff Seargeant, Warrant Officer Class 2, Warrant Officer Class 1
Private
Title may be different depending on which Corps you join
Lance Corporal
Generally supervise teams of up to 4 soldiers (3 years)
Corporal
Command more soldiers and may be in control of equipment such as tanks and guns (6-8 years)
Sergeant
Senior role, usually involving managing and administrating a platoon or troop of about 30 soldiers. Also be working closely with junior officers who command this
Staff Sergeant
Sometimes known as a colour sergeant. Usually be the troop or platoon second in command responsible for around 30 soldiers, assisting the junior officer in command
Warrant Officer Class 2
Focus on training, welfare and discipline of a company, squadron or battery of up to 120 men. Adviser to the Major in charge of your subunit.
Warrant Officer Class 1
Or Regimental Sergeant Major. Most senior soldier rank. One of the commanding officer’s technical advisers. Responsibilities of up to 650 people. (~ 18 years)
Platoon
a subdivision of a company of soldiers, usually forming a tactical unit that is commanded by a subaltern or lieutenant and divided into three sections
