he island of Jamaica was captured by the British on
May 11, 1655. The island was poorly defended and sparsely populated. Many of the Spaniards fled the island and their enslaved ran away to the mountains and became the Maroons.

When the profits in tobacco declined the British settlers turned to growing sugar cane

Ate large three or more courses meals– in fancy plates and glasses
