What was the Emergency Powers Act?
made it law for published articles to have a positive tone
so people’s fighting spirit would not be undermined
Why did the Government use propaganda?
encouraged people to help war effort
raised morale of people
What were the impacts of the war on food production and how was it increased?
2/3 of food was imported before the war, the amount of food that could be imported was cut by half during the war
allotments were made to encourage people to grow their own food
increase in ‘pig clubs’ where pigs were grown and then their meat was shared
What other items were rationed?
there was a 100% tax on luxury items
there was limited clothing coupons
people were encouraged to make and mend their clothes
Wha was the role of women in the war?
women’s land army - provided labour on farms as there was a shortage, lack of machinery and a hard job
1.5 million women were employed in industries creating war material, 60 hour week and low wages
women between 20-30 that were unmarried were conscripted in 1941
Womens voluntary service - 1 million members, kitchen and shelters for bomb victims, escorted evacuees, darned 38,000 socks for the army
What were the successes and failures of d-day?
successes:
- allowed millions of troops to enter, 156,000 landed on the day
- removed pressure from the eastern front
- vehicles and supporting materials landed in Normandy
failures:
- 10,000 casualties, 2,000 deaths
- allies were trapped in Normandy for 2 months
How was Germany defeated?
USA brought vast amounts of weaponry to the war
Germany was under pressure from all sides
there was some mistakes:
- in September 1944, Generals hurried to liberate Netherlands and were defeated
- Germans counterattacked at the Battle of Bulge (dec 1944), but they used their final reserves (lost 100,000 troops)
By April 1945, Soviet troops entered Berlin, Hitler killed himself and the Germans surrendered
