What happened in the Battle of Britain?
it was a battle between the RAF and the Luftwaffe over control of British air space
lasted 2 months
Why did Hitler need the air space?
so he could bomb towns and cities without the threat of the RAF
so invading ships would not be bombed by the RAF
Why did Britain win?
British strengths:
- RADAR systems which alerted the RAF where planes were and how many there were
- the RAF had more planes than the Luftwaffe
- Spitfires were more efficient than German planes
German weaknesses:
-did not replace lost planes fast enough
What were the 4 stages in the Battle of Britain?
10 July - 7 August - Luftwaffe attack RADAR stations
8 August - 6 September - Luftwaffe attack air fields
7 September - 15 September - Luftwaffe think the RAF are beaten and attack London
15 September - Luftwaffe defeated
What were the impacts of the Blitz?
43,000 civilians killed
2 million made homeless
What were the positives of evacuation?
reduced the number of vulnerable people in cities
freed parents to volunteer in the war effort
evacuees received education
What were the negatives of evacuation?
separated children from their families
not enough homes
some fosters mistreated children
