What happened in the Battle of Britain?

A

it was a battle between the RAF and the Luftwaffe over control of British air space

Why did Hitler need the air space?

A

so he could bomb towns and cities without the threat of the RAF

so invading ships would not be bombed by the RAF

Why did Britain win?

A

British strengths:

  • RADAR systems which alerted the RAF where planes were and how many there were
  • the RAF had more planes than the Luftwaffe
  • Spitfires were more efficient than German planes

German weaknesses:
-did not replace lost planes fast enough

10 July - 7 August - Luftwaffe attack RADAR stations

8 August - 6 September - Luftwaffe attack air fields

7 September - 15 September - Luftwaffe think the RAF are beaten and attack London
