Examples of stalemates
Telephone:
Generals never had to fight in the battlefield. They could just call. However, there were no strategic opportunities.
Canned food:
Soldiers always had a reliable source of food. Troops could stay in an area for months without leaving.
Machine guns:
They could take out a wave of soldiers in seconds. No land gains were made because no one could advance.

The Germans ignored the Russians because they did not think that they would respond as quickly to war.
The Belgians fought with France which slowed the Germans down.

The British and Belgians also went North to prevent the Germans from taking over major ports
