Q

Why is it that you should not bid a pre-emptive bid if you have a 4 card major suit?

A

The reason is because you may have a fit in that major suit and you do not want to discount that possibilty of finding that major-suit fit. By opening with a pre-emptive 3♦ bid here, the Spades may be lost forever.

Q

When your partner has bid a negative double, how should you respond?

A

We have a hand in the minimum range for an opening bid (12-14 points or so), and thus we respond with a minimum Spade bid: 2♠. If we had 15-17 (or thereabouts), we’d invite with 3♠, and with 18-20, we’d go directly to game.

18
Q

what are 3 examples of playing a loser on a loser?

A
  1. Every time you fail to ruff an enemy card for fear of an over ruff and throw away a loser instead
  2. When you have lead the 12th card of a suit towards dummy and finding it covered on your left, do not ruff for fear of an over ruff but discard one of dummy’s losers and eventually ruff that suit instead
  3. If the loser you are playing from one hand is promoting a winner in it, you can discard 2 losers from the other hand. (assuming you are void in the suit in the other hand)
19
Q

how do you determine how many entries you need to the board to set up a suit so that you can use cards to discard losers in your hand?

A

you can play a low card from your hand to take care of a round without getting to the board.
you can play a low card from your hand to the A of the suit you are trying to set up and then lead another card from the suit. This counts as 2 rounds.

for other entries to the board you need a high card in dummy.
