Q

If you are responding to 1NT and you have a balanced hand and have 16-17 pts. what should you do?

A

Bid 4NT inviting small slam. Opener will pass with 16 or fewer pts or bid 6Nt with 17 pts. If opener has 17 pts and a 5 card suit, he will jump to 6 of that suit and give responder the option of leaving the bid in that suit or bidding 6NT.

17
Q

If you are responding to 1NT and you have a balanced hand and 18 - 19 pts, what should you do?

A

Bid 6 NT - sign off in small slam

18
Q

If you are responding to 1NT and you have a balanced hand and have 20 -21 pts, what should you do?

A

Bid 5NT inviting a grand slam - if opener has 16 or fewer points he will bid 6NT or with 17pts will bid 7NT

19
Q

How does playing an eight card or longer suit compare with playing in NT?

A

Eight card or more major suit will usually provide at least one more trick than NT, and often two or more tricks.

20
Q

With an 8 card minor suit fit, is it best to play in the suit or NT?

A

At game level it is best to play 3NT rather than 5C or 5D. In partscore or slam contracts it is usually best to choose the safety of the minor suit.

21
Q

What is the Stayman convention and when is it used?

A

Stayman is used to respond to a 1NT opener. The objective is to find an 8 card major suit. Use it on any hand with 8 or more points and at least one four card major suit.

22
Q

When a person opens 1NT and partner responds 2C, what should opener bid when he has 4 cards in hearts and spades both?

A

Bid 1 Heart

23
Q

When a prtnership is using Stayman and responder discovers that they have 8 cards in the major suit and more than 10 points, what should he bid?

A

Bid 4 of the major suit. If we do not have 8 of a major suit, bid 3NT.

24
Q

When a prtnership is using Stayman and responder discovers that they have 8 cards in the major suit and have 8-9 points, what should he bid?

A

3 of the major suit. If we don’t have 8 cards in a major suit bid 2NT.

25
Q

When partner doubles, what must you have to bid 1NT?

A

7 - 10 points plus a stopper in oppnent’s suit
